As you probably know by now, the products we sell here have one important thing in common: they are products I personally used (and then later designed) to help me get through a rough patch of insomnia I was experiencing many years ago.

These weighted blankets (also called throw blankets) offer a variety of benefits, which include evenly distributed weight that restricts your movement during the night. So if you’re someone who tosses and turns while you sleep, a weighted blanket has the potential to limit this dramatically. Additionally, our heavy blanket can be used as a heated and cooling weighted blanket. Depending on your preference, you can make it as cold or warm as you want it. 

So that’s probably the most obvious weighted blanket benefit. Now let’s look at additional reasons why you need a temperature-regulating blanket, ranging from scientific reasons to ones that are all about convenience.

Help You Reduce Anxiety

This is by far the most important reason on this list. On its own, a weighted blanket can simulate the feeling of being cradled, which is also referred to as deep touch pressure. This has a nice side effect: it increases the release of serotonin, which is a calming neurotransmitter that plays a role in managing your sleep.

This deep touch pressure provides critical benefits at bedtime: it reduces activity in your nervous system and slows down a racing mind. When combined with pre-bedtime habits like meditation or journaling, this all works together to lower your anxiety and stress levels when your head hits the pillow. A weighted blanket can improve sleep quality by simulating the feeling of being held, which is also known as deep touch pressure. This can lead to an increase in the release of serotonin, a calming neurotransmitter that plays a role in governing your sleep.

Thanks to its evenly distributed weight, a weighted blanket’s calming embrace also inhibits movement during the night. If you consistently toss and turn while you sleep, or have restless leg syndrome, a weighted blanket has the potential to keep you still for longer periods, which encourages a deeper night’s sleep. With the help of the blanket, you can get the relaxing pressure without constrictions to the legs.

What is melatonin? It's a hormone that helps promote sleep and regulate your circadian rhythm or sleep cycle. A weighted blanket can cause melatonin to be produced. If you are looking for a way to increase your melatonin and serotonin levels, a weighted blanket may help.

Reduces Restless Leg Syndrome

RLS (also referred to as restless leg syndrome) is a condition that can cause the uncontrollable urge to move your legs. It can interrupt your sleep, causing many to feel tired in the morning. Studies have found that participants with restless leg syndrome say that their symptoms are less when they apply something heavy pressing down on their legs while sleeping, which a weighted blanket can provide.

Build Your Own “Sleep Sandwich”

Our heating and cooling weighted blanket is unique in the sense that it also offers temperature regulation via hydronic (water-based) cooling, much like our cooling pads for the beds. This means you can raise or lower the temperature based on your personal preference, or to meet the demands of your ever-changing environment.

However, if you’re a full-on chili geek that already has one of our OOLERs or Cubes, then once you have the cooling weighted blanket you can create what I call the “sandwich.” This allows you to maximize the temperature potential, which we all know can help you optimize the amount of deep sleep and REM sleep you’re getting on a nightly basis. However, it can also offer a huge assist for sleep latency (i.e., the amount of time it takes you to fall asleep once the lights are turned off).

Take It Almost Anywhere With You

While the first two reasons are focused on improving sleep and comfort, a temperature-controlled weighted blanket is also far more portable than an entire sleep system. This means you can use it when you travel, which I’ve done multiple times over the past few weeks. That way you still have all the benefits of a weighted “anxiety blanket”—even if you don’t have the temperature-regulating features—when you’re on a road trip.

That portability translates to home, too: it’s easy to pull the chiliBLANKET from your bed to the couch, or even outside on the porch to use in your favorite rocking chair. Ultimately, the fact that it’s easily transported—whether a few feet or quite a few miles—is a huge benefit. I think it’s especially important for traveling since many of us struggle to sleep as well as we do when we’re away from home already, so having a “security blanket” can only help.

This isn’t as important or as practical, but those of us who enjoy snuggling up on the couch with our furry friends will certainly appreciate this fourth reason.
