Keeping a Snake Plant in my bedroom greatly affected the air quality in my personal space and thus improved my quality of sleep and life. I hope my story can help improve your sleep life as well, so here it is.
Air quality is important. Duh. No one will contest that breathing cool mountain air into our lungs feels a whole lot better than sucking down smog in the city streets. But, sometimes air quality (or lack thereof) escapes us. That is to say, just because we don’t see dark billowing clouds of smog doesn’t mean that the air quality is good.
Here’s a story about how air quality can escape us.
I lived a number of years in Santiago, Chile. Before moving there I had no idea that due to a unique combination of social, geographic and climatological circumstances, Santiago had some of the worst air quality in the world depending on the time of year. Yet, the sight of the snow-capped Andes would have given me the exact opposite impression. It wasn’t until I had a runny nose and saw the soot-colored snot that I realized the truth of invisible levels of air quality. This got my attention.
Where else was I being affected by poor air quality without knowing it? I decided to do some investigating and I didn’t quite like what I found. But, awareness is the first step to fixing a problem. I discovered that while we tend to associate poor air quality with outdoor elements such as pollution, that our indoor spaces are often a far greater source of unhealthy air due to the presence of substances such as “lead (in house dust), formaldehyde, fire-retardants, radon, even volatile chemicals from fragrances used in conventional cleaners.”
Ok air quality, you have my attention.
Now that we know there is a problem, what can we do to fix it?
There are several ways that we can improve our air quality with fairly minimal effort. As I mentioned, the air quality outside is often better than that on the inside. So, why not bring outside in? In researching ways to improve my indoor air quality I came across a solution that will not only help me feel better but will make my place look better as well. Talk about a win-win. And it’s NASA recommended? That’s a win-win-win in my book.
Keeping plants in the house, especially the bedroom where we spend most of our time, will have a tremendous impact on the quality of our air and your sleep. There are a number of relatively inexpensive plants that you can purchase such as the peace lily, aloe vera, spider plant and valerian to name a few. But, one plant rose above the others in my research and it was the snake plant.
“Snakes…why did it have to be snakes.”
Just like Indiana Jones, I’m deathly afraid of snakes, so the name initially perturbed me, but the information eventually overwhelmed me into believing in the merits of sticking one or two snake plants into my bedroom.
What’s the big deal about snake plants?
The snake plant emits oxygen in the evening, while also taking in CO2, a natural byproduct of breathing. It also filters common household toxins like formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, toluene, and benzene from the air. It’s so infamous for improving sleep that it has earned the nicknames of “oxygen factory” and “the bedroom plant.”
Purchasing a couple of these miracle plants will greatly enhance your sleep hygiene and overall sleep quality. I never thought I’d say this about something with "snake" in the name, but I never want to go back to sleeping in a room without a snake plant or something like it again. And it’s so simple! But, don’t take my word for it, try it for yourself. I guarantee that you will notice a difference within a week or two.
